The Old School House – A Thoughtfully Designed Home in Gilberdyke

The Old School House is nestled in the heart of Gilberdyke, a welcoming village close to the banks of the Humber Estuary and within easy reach of Hull, York and the M62 motorway. The home is just a 15-minute walk from Gilberdyke’s mainline train station and surrounded by the charm and convenience of local village life. Residents enjoy visits to nearby coffee shops, delicatessens, hair salons and the Cross Keys pub, as well as both Gilberdyke Methodist Church and the Church of Saint Stephen, built in 1899.

Originally a village school built in 1895, the building has been thoughtfully converted into a warm and comfortable care home. Many of the original features remain, giving the home its distinctive character and sense of history. Every corner has been designed to promote wellbeing, from cosy private bedrooms to light-filled communal areas where residents can relax, socialise or take part in daily activities.

It features 40 comfortable deluxe and en-suite bedrooms, including six larger bungalow-style rooms with their own shower-wet room en-suites, individual private terraces, kitchenette and a cosy lounge. Inside the main home, light-filled communal areas create space to socialise, relax or take part in daily activities — while outdoors, residents enjoy our mature gardens and colourful terraces.

Home Details

The home is full of spaces designed to make everyday life enjoyable and engaging. There is a bistro-style restaurant, a complimentary sweet shop, a cinema and games area, an interactive residents’ table, and a welcoming hair and beauty salon. Our popular coffee bar is a favourite meeting spot for residents, visitors and staff alike.

The Old School House is a small, family-run home with a reputation for personalised care and genuine connection. Everyone from our management team to carers, kitchen and domestic staff works closely together, helping each resident feel safe, supported and part of the community.

From trips out in Gilberdyke to shared conversations over a cup of tea, we focus on the small things that make a big difference. This is a place where residents are listened to, empowered and treated with warmth and dignity — a true home from home.

    Meet the Deputy Manager, Kath

    Kath started her journey with us at our sister care home Orchard Court in South Cave as a kitchen assistant, after welcoming her two beautiful children and then quickly progressed to kitchen manager after qualifying with her NVQ in catering and residential care.

    She enjoyed the interaction with the residents as a kitchen manager because she could tailor each weekly menu to the love of food the residents appreciated and enjoyed. While working in this role, Kath wanted to give more back to her residents and decided to train as a career and worked the two roles as career and kitchen manager side by side.

    With her hard work and success at both rewarding roles, Kath was soon given the opportunity to take on the role as a senior career and gain superior experience working for high dependency residents who displayed challenging behaviours.

    Kath then worked for our other sister care home Brough Manor on Station Road in her role as a senior career and then when the opportunity became available to progress as a deputy manager at The Old School House it was the perfect alignment for years of dedication and hard-work she had given for so many years.

    Out of work Kath is a devoted mother and loves spending time with her family and friends, looking after animals whenever she can and other love in her life is motorsport, 4 wheels not two.

    In her own words “it has been a great opportunity to work for a small family group of homes so closely together and to have that same relationship with my fellow work colleagues and residents with their smiles we get each and every single day “.

    Meet our Head Chef, Lucy

    From the age of 11 years old, Lucy has always had a great passion for cooking and baking.

    Her love for cooking, like most talented chefs, started with her family, cooking at home as much as she could and it was then she decided to pursue her career as a chef.

    Lucy started her career journey with us at the age of 15 working for Orchard Court Care Home, one of our sister homes located in South Cave. She worked there for 3 years as a kitchen assistant while studying at college for a further two years to become a fully trained chef.

    Once she graduated, Lucy wanted to expand on her culinary skills and gained a phenomenal, professional experience by working for the celebrity chef Jamie Oliver MBE.

    In her spare time Lucy nurtures her own small cake business, called Sweet Tweetz, that she loves to enjoy with her family and close friends.

    Lucy’s hard work and ability to produce the very best in home cooked delicious wholesome food, meant she always wanted to return back to cooking for our elderly residents, as for her it meant they could  always enjoy food that they wouldn’t typically be able to have available to them.

    In her own words, “The residents we look after become part of your family and it is always important to go that extra mile for them, as for me personally working for The Old School feels like home”.

    Meet the Area Manager, Hayley

    Before Hayley joined the team in 2016, her passion was that of a sporting nature. From the age of 10 years old she played professional football for Hull City where she progressed throughout the age groups. She was one of the youngest players at that time to break through into the ladies’ squad at the age of 14. Hayley played for the England team, however after a knee injury at the age of 17 unfortunately her football career ended early.

    Hayley then went on to graduate from university and then completed her professional coaching awards to a UEFA B certified coach and worked for Hull City for five years.

    It was these hard working and dedicated years that Hayley gained her leadership and teamwork skills.

    After the birth of her beautiful daughter and then the unfortunate sudden passing of her grandmother, her outlook on life changed very quickly. 

    Hayley decided that she would like to make a career within this sector where she could hopefully make a difference and have a positive impact on other people’s day to day lives who really need it most.  

    In her own words, “I have worked for the company for just short of a decade, where I progressed throughout a range of different roles. I consider myself a strong member of the team, after working closely with the directors for several years. This is where I gained most of my knowledge which I utilise on a daily basis and project across the workforce, whilst maintaining a team culture throughout the homes”.

    Meet the Maintenance Manager, Steve

    Steve has been working with our family business since 2014 and many of our staff and in particular our residents class him as their close friends.

    Before he joined the team his background was working in public house and social clubs and for 15 years he managed and owned two public houses and his own social club with over 400 members. Steve had 18 employees all working with him across the three venues which also included a tattoo studio and professional qualified piercing salon. 

    Steve is an incredible people’s person and with these many years of life and working experience, this certainly helps him connect with all our residents.

    In his personal life Steve enjoys many hours at his static caravan in Skegness and sails on his fishing boat in Bridlington. He has a strong farming background and lots of different hobbies including a classic car and motorbikes which gives him plenty to talk about with the residents from all walks of life.

    In his own words, “With my many years of maintaining my public houses and social club, I am able to turn my hand to pretty much anything. When a resident wants a personal item repaired, I can usually help or know someone that can, which is very satisfying to see the smile on our residents faces. I really enjoy working as part of a genuine small family team and will be working with them all until my retirement”.

    Meet the Administration Manager, Adel

    Adel has worked in the Health and Social Care Sector for many years, where she started off as a carer assistant role, working in the community, delivering care and support to residents in their own homes in which was incredibly rewarding 

    In 2012 Adel and her family were given an opportunity to move to Spain to renovate and set up a self-catering business in a small Spanish Village. Adel has two beautiful children who studied at a local Spanish school and integrated quickly, which made her very proud of them both.

    They all learnt many new things, including speaking Spanish, meeting new people, looking after guests from many different countries and picked olives from their very own 128 Olive Trees where they produced their own olive oil. One of her daughters performed in many Flamenco dancing shows, one of which was at the Alhambra Palace in Granada, this was an experience she will always remember and cherish.

    In 2018 after many successful years Adel and her family sold their Spanish home and moved back to England to pursue her long love of care and secured a care assistant role at Brough Manor. With her hard work and determination Adel soon progressed to a senior carer role at The Old Vicarage some 2 years later.

    Over the next 5 years Adel gained the necessary skills and upmost respect from her fellow work colleagues which resulted in her being the perfect person to support our great team across all our care homes and was appointed our group administration manager.

    In her own words, “I have an amazing opportunity to work with a great team of directors and staff across all of our care homes and feel this is where I belong as part of our small family at East Riding Care Services.”
